9 Tips for Being Fuel Efficient

• Avoid Idling Your Vehicle

Without a doubt, the very worst gas mileage you can achieve is 0 MPG. And when you idle your vehicle, this is exactly what you'll achieve. Whether you are pulling to the side of the road to make a phone call, waiting outside for someone, or at a railroad crossing, you should consider turning your vehicle off if it's longer than 30 seconds. 

• Ensure Proper Tire Inflation

Your tires play a critical role in virtually every aspect of your driving, including the fuel economy you achieve. Simply put, underinflated tires can dramatically reduce your fuel economy. For instance, being under-inflated by as little as 10 PSI per tire can result in a five MPG reduction. When your tires are underinflated, it results in your engine having to work harder to move the vehicle. You can avoid this costly scenario by ensuring your tires are properly inflated.

 Check your owner's manual to learn the best pressure for ideal traction and MGPs. 

• Reduce Drag

Drag can be defined as the aerodynamic force that opposes your vehicle as it moves forward on the highway. 

All vehicles are engineered with a design that naturally reduces drag, but when you add certain accessories, it can increase drag. So, if you have roof boxes, external carrying kits, or bike racks, you can improve your MPGs by removing them when not being used. 

• Turn Your AC Off

Unless it's really hot outside or freezing, it's best to leave your AC turned off. When you use the AC, it can put an extra strain on your engine, which will necessitate it to burn more fuel. And this problem can be further exasperated when you're traveling at low speeds. 

• Use the Right Motor Oil

Every vehicle is different, and it's important to use the motor oil designed for your vehicle. As with tire pressure, you can always refer to your owner's manual for the suggested type of motor oil. 

In the event you use heavier motor oil than recommended, it can create unnecessary friction, which can cause your engine to work much harder and burn more fuel. Instead of wasting gas, ensure your vehicle is using the right motor oil from the beginning. 

• Accelerate & Stop Wisely

While we all may want to unleash our inner speed demon from time to time, this isn't the most fuel-efficient practice. Neither is it the most fuel-efficient practice to come to a screeching halt. To get the most out of every gallon, avoid accelerating quickly or stomping on your brakes.

 You'll find the best fuel efficiency when you coast to a stop. In addition to saving you on fuel, this practice will reduce the wear and tear on your brakes, which can further protect your wallet. 

• Drive Below or at the Speed Limit

The majority of vehicles will operate at a much more efficient level at speeds when you're traveling at 60 MPH or below. When you drive at speeds higher, it can significantly reduce your MPGs. 

At the same time, it can result in a more costly outcome - a speeding ticket. Today, most vehicles will vary at the levels in which they are most efficient, but no vehicle on the road will have a peak efficiency level at 60 MPH or higher. 

• Cruise When You Can

Along the same lines as the previous tip, you can save fuel by using cruise control whenever you can. Using cruise control helps you maintain a legal, safe, and gas-efficient speed, regardless of what others around you are doing. 

It also helps reduce your need to brake, which can guzzle gas at an enormous rate.
