Volvo S60 vs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

From Sylvania to Toledo, car buyers have high standards when it comes to the luxury sedan segment. Two of the top options in this class are our Volvo S60 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, specifically the C 300 model. We thought it a good idea to see how these two matched up after the recent redesign of the S60, so we put them to the test on the features that matter most to our Maumee and Holland customers.

Performance

Each sedan is powered by a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, with performance metrics that are remarkably similar. For instance, while the C-Class does have a slight edge in horsepower, the S60 enjoys the better city and highway fuel economy numbers -- making it a better option if you have a daily commute. Both come equipped with front-wheel drive standard, with all-wheel drive an available option for each.

Technology

These days, the features that used to be the exclusive offerings for premium cars have found their way to becoming standard issue for nearly every vehicle. It's no wonder, then, that these sedans differentiate themselves not only with the state-of-the-art technologies you expect, such as infotainment systems, but also the safety and driver-assistance features that make life on the Ohio roads that much safer. However, some standard features found on the introductory S60, such as lane keep assist and lane departure warning, are only available as options on the C-Class sedan -- making an already more expensive sedan that much pricier.

Interior Comfort

There's not much to separate these two in terms of passenger space, as both offer the four-door, two-row cabins you expect. However, interior quality is based on so much more than just shoulder room. For example, the Volvo S60 features a standard panoramic moonroof; to add that extra bit of natural lighting to the cabin of the C-Class once again requires adding a feature as a costly option.
